Getting here from the airport

Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS) is about 15 km away – roughly 20 minutes by car or taxi via the A4 and the A10 ring road, or 25 minutes by train to Amsterdam Zuid and metro line 52 to De Pijp.

Rather skip the transfer altogether? We deliver directly to Schiphol and hand the car over at the terminal.

Driving & parking in Amsterdam

A few things worth knowing before you turn the key:

Parking is the real challenge

Street parking inside the A10 ring is paid almost everywhere, in the center around the clock, and it's expensive: up to €8.05 per hour downtown, around €7 in neighborhoods like De Pijp.

Pay at the meter by entering your license plate or use an app such as Parkmobile or EasyPark. There's no ticket to display, scan cars check plates automatically.
A parking fine is over €80 plus at least an hour's parking, and cars blocking tram tracks or bike lanes get towed, getting one back costs approx. €484.

For anything longer than a coffee, use a garage: APCOA Heinekenplein (open 24/7) and Q-Park Museumplein are both about ten minutes' walk from our station.

For a day in the center with the car parked, P+R RAI (one metro stop to De Pijp) costs currently €6 per 24 hours if you arrive after 10 am on weekdays or any time at weekends, provided you ride into town and back by public transport; on event days the standard rate applies.

Trams and bikes have the right of way - always

Trams take priority even when they come from the left, and Amsterdam's cyclists are fast, numerous and rarely stop for cars. Check the bike lane every time you turn right, and never park or stop on a bike lane or tram track, not even for a minute. Rows of white "shark teeth" triangles painted on the road mean you yield.

Canals don't have railings

Parallel parking along the water is normal here, but please just take it slowly! And along the canals, one-way streets and no-through-traffic signs change without much warning.

Low Emission Zone (milieuzone)

Everything inside the A10 ring road is a low emission zone, checked by cameras 24/7, but it only applies to diesel cars. Petrol and electric cars are unaffected, no sticker or registration required.

Speed limits & cameras

30 km/h (19 mph) on roughly 80% of Amsterdam's streets, 50 km/h (31 mph) on the main roads, 100 km/h (62 mph) on motorways during the day (6 am to 7 pm) and 130 km/h (81 mph) at night, plus all day on a handful of signed stretches such as the Afsluitdijk.

The overhead matrix boards always win. Dutch motorways use section control (trajectcontrole), which measures your average speed over several kilometers, so you can't slow down for the camera.

Fines are among the highest in Europe, with no discount for early payment. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5‰, and 0.2‰ for drivers licensed less than five years.

No tolls

Dutch motorways are free, as are all tunnels around Amsterdam. The one exception is the new A24 Blankenburg tunnel west of Rotterdam (€1.57, no barrier, you pay online within three days, so watch for the signs).

Heading into Belgium, only the Liefkenshoek tunnel north of Antwerp charges a toll. The main E19 route is free, and so is the German Autobahn.
