Why did BMW's sports car get so little attention? The design and the drivetrain are innovative and break with every convention. BMW's hybrid sports car should have a lot more fans - and we're happy to show you why!

The delivery date was pushed back twice, but in mid-2019 the 992-generation Porsche Carrera S Cabriolet finally stood in our garage. We picked up the new version with the old one, namely a Porsche 911 Carrera T of the 991.2 generation, so the conditions for a back-to-back comparison were perfect.

Tougher European emissions rules and modest sales were to blame: in 2019, Audi gave the R8 a facelift that - over here at least - also brought a gasoline particulate filter along with it. So we decided to take a white Audi R8 V10 Spyder into our rental fleet. Naturally, we put the sports car from Ingolstadt (Audi's hometown) under the microscope and tested it thoroughly. Porsche's GT models grew out of one idea: pack as much race-car technology as possible into a street-legal car. The innovations from the race cars - the Porsche 911 RSR, for example - flow into the next generation of the GT4, GT3 or GT2. So the street-legal GT variants carry real motorsport genes. That's what sets them so far apart from their respective base models, even though they wear essentially the same bodywork.

For 7 generations, Porsche has used the Turbo badge to crown each 911 series with the pinnacle of what's possible in straight-line performance. Along the way it's had more or less serious rivals. Only the Nissan GT-R in 2007 was ever really able to stand up to the 911 Turbo. Since then, you get the feeling that Porsche's engineers made a vow never again to give the competition even the slightest chance. Which is why we're all the more excited today to drive the Porsche 911 Turbo S from the current 992 generation.

We got to pick up the new BMW M4 right at BMW Welt when sales kicked off in March 2021 – and after 1,200 agonizing break-in miles the thing is finally properly run in and we can take a closer look. And we can't shake the feeling that there's some serious potential in the new BMW M4 Competition.

Our Porsche 911 GT3 992 has now covered around 18,600 miles in a little over six months and has its first service behind it.
