AWD Car Rental in Germany

When there is snow on the ground, the roads are icy or you are heading into the mountains, you want a car you can rely on. Renting an AWD car is the easy answer: all-wheel drive sends power to all four wheels, so the car pulls away cleanly, stays on line and climbs snowy grades without drama.

At CarVia, AWD doesn't just mean SUV. Alongside the Cayenne, Urus, G-Class and Range Rover you'll also find sports cars and sedans with all-wheel drive, from the Porsche 911 Turbo and the Audi RS6 to the BMW M5. In winter our cars run on winter tires as standard, with no extra charge. Your AWD rental is booked online in a few minutes, and you pick it up at one of our stations or have it delivered.

Rent an AWD car for grip you can feel

Our most popular all-wheel-drive cars are our SUVs: Porsche Cayenne, Porsche Macan, Lamborghini Urus, Mercedes G-Class, Range Rover Sport, Land Rover Defender, BMW X5 and BMW X7. With all that space they are perfect for families or for a lot of luggage, and in wind and weather they shine with the way they handle in traffic.

If you'd rather drive something sporty, you don't have to give up AWD in winter: the Porsche 911 Turbo and the Porsche Taycan (as 4S and Turbo), the Audi RS6 and the BMW M5 all put their power down through all four wheels.

Audi is known around the world for its quattro all-wheel drive. Even Audi's sports cars like the Audi R8 come with it, because it means quicker acceleration.

AWD in winter: winter tires included

All-wheel drive helps you get going and accelerate on snow; your tires decide how quickly you stop. That is why we switch our cars with the season: winter tires in winter, summer tires in summer, no all-season tires. The winter tires are included in the rental price, with no surcharge.

Germany has a situational winter tire law: in snow, ice, slush or frost you may only drive on winter tires. With a CarVia rental car you are covered, whether you are heading from Munich into the Alps for a ski weekend, driving from one Christmas market to the next or taking the autobahn in winter weather.

Your U.S. or Canadian driver's license is all you need, no international driving permit required. You book exactly the model you choose, no "or similar". On request we deliver your AWD car to your hotel or to the airport (MUC, FRA, HAM, BER, STR, DUS, NUE), and at many of our stations you can drop the key in a key safe 24/7 when you return the car.

Great company. Rented a GT4 in Stuttgart, they took the time to walk around the car to document any damages, asked for me to take pictures and videos. Great process, Car was clean and in excellent shape. Super service, could not be happier. I will have to do a trip every year from now on.

Fantastic service that I wish we had in Australia. Will definitely use again when in Germany. Great selection of cars at reasonable prices with great professional service. Had a Cayman GTS this time around for a few days and look forward to trying some of the other fleet vehicles next time!

FAQ: AWD rental cars in Germany

Yes. We fit winter and summer tires to match the season and don't use all-season tires. Winter tires are included in the rental price, with no surcharge.

Not necessarily, but it makes a lot of things easier: AWD sends power to all four wheels, which helps when pulling away on a hill, on snow and in the wet. For braking, the tires matter, which is why we always pair AWD with winter tires in winter. If you are driving into the mountains or just want a relaxed winter trip, AWD is a good call.

SUVs such as the Porsche Cayenne and Macan, Lamborghini Urus, Mercedes G-Class, Range Rover Sport and Defender, BMW X5 and X7, Audi SQ7 and RSQ8. The current selection is in the car sliders above.

In Germany, snow chains are only mandatory where a road sign requires them, usually on mountain passes. On cleared roads, AWD plus winter tires will get you where you are going. If you are planning an Alpine pass with a chain requirement, talk to us before you book.
